Breakfast Blech

I decided that J and I needed to start the 3rd day of recording at Capitol with a nice hearty breakfast casserole. So I found a recipe in my crock-pot book that looked pretty yummy, put it together on Friday night and set it to cook through the night. Great idea right? It sounded yummy too – eggs, cheese, bacon, bread cubes, and a little milk, salt and pepper.  Sounds ok, right?  I got up this morning excited to try it, and well…… the way it looked should have been my first clue. J’s quote was,

“It looks like already eaten dog food.”

Yep. It sure did. Sigh.

I decided we should give it a try anyway, thinking, “Maybe it will taste better than it looks. I mean can you go wrong with eggs, cheese and bacon? I think not.”

You can. I did.

The texture was something like a soggy breakfast sandwich with undercooked eggs. Blech.  My husband was very kind to eat most of it. I took two bites and gave the rest to Fritzy, who happened to love it (probably because it reminded him of his canned food).

I wish I would have thought to take a picture of it for you, but I was so grossed out that I had a Nacho moment – “get that slop outta my face!”

Oh well. Starbucks came to our rescue.

Capitol Sessions – Day 2

DAY TWO here at Capitol Records. We started the day with our friend, Lukas VanDyke taking a few band shots outside with the Capitol building in the background. We were thrilled to have him around for a bit to take some session shots for us.  I can’t wait to see what he gets!

We started the session right on time this morning with two quick passes on “Forgetful Soul.”  Since it was the final tune we did last night, we wanted to get a quick fresh morning take. Around 10:30 we jumped in to “Holy is Our God” which is a great song of praise to our great God. This tune was a bit tougher for us to get than we expected. It’s one of those songs that sounds simple, but takes meticulous focus and effort.

Around 1:30 we moved on to “Search and Know Me” – a driving rock song inspired by Psalm 139.

Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.

When you record at Capitol they really take care of you – from fresh fruit, bagels and cream cheese in the morning to having lunch brought in for you, to keeping the coffee flowing all day. Today, they brought us lunch from Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. Mmmmmmm….

After getting our arteries greased, we went back in for a nap one more take on “Search and Know Me.”  Our great friend and audio master, Darius Fong joined us.

Next we started in on “Come Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy.” I’ve always loved this song’s haunting melody and beautifully poetic lyrics written in 1757 by Joseph Hart.  This arrangement, with a new chorus by Ryan Foglesong, is one of my favorites. It’s a great deep-folk arrangement that starts in 6/8, moves to 4/4 for the verses and then back to 6/8 for the choruses. You’re gonna dig it.  On the last take, Scott told the guys to think out of the box and be creative with their parts. Boy were they! John was even playing the piano strings with a pencil!

7 songs done!

We reached our 3 song goal today several hours earlier than we were expecting so we jumped right in to the next tune – “Bring Me Back to Calvary” – a great Celtic-folksy tune centered around the cross. The Getty’s would be proud of this one. :)  We’re hoping to bring in all kinds of celtic sounds and instruments – maybe even uilleann pipes. For today, Scott had us each grab a couple of drum sticks and play some multi drum loops. It was great. At one point, he had us all sitting on the floor and just using sticks on the floor. It felt like percussion learning day in kindergarten.

After a quick break, John and I recorded the beginning of the gorgeous ballad, “Beyond My Highest Thought.” The intro and first verse are a lovely rubato piano and vocal. Of course, my vocal was just for reference. We won’t be recording vocals until later in March.

Singing on Frank Sinatra's chair!

Once we were happy with several takes, the band came back in to play out the rest of the song. The break must have done them good, because they nailed the first take with only a few little woopsies here and there. We wrapped on Beyond in no time. That was 9 tunes down all together! YIPPEE!!

The last song we worked on was “Run Toward the Cross” which is a powerful song about our need to always be returning to the cross, remembering the cost of our salvation and repenting of sin.

Capitol Sessions – Day 1

It’s DAY ONE of the recording sessions for the next Enfield CD. Today, tomorrow and Saturday, we’ll be recording “basics” (drums, bass, rhythm guitars (both acoustic and electric) and piano). We loaded in to Capitol Records early this morning and spent the first half of the day setting up, tuning and getting sounds. We even had the Drum Doctor come in to tune and EQ the drums.

Alright, now, recording at Capitol is AMAZING. Do you know who was in this studio just last week? Diana Krall and Barbara Streisand. What?!   I had a moment in the restroom when I realized that Diana and Babs probably sat on the very same toilet last week. Hm. I guess you could say the same thing about everything in the studio. Who knows how many artists have sat on the very couch I’m sitting on as I type!

Ok, so anyway…. Once we got everything set up and tweaked we were ready to start recording. We started around 1:00 with “Wayward Love.”  Wayward is a great tune about our tendency to wander and how we need the Refiner’s fire to purify us.  By 2:30 were on to “The Voyage” which is a wonderfully watery tune about God guiding us through this life and ultimately to heaven using the image of a ship on an ocean voyage.

After a quick lunch from my favorite Mexican place – Poquito Mas – we jumped right back in to recording. The next tune on the list was “Down to the River” which is one of my favorites so far. It’s a great bluesy, folk-rock celebration of our salvation using a river as wonderful imagery.

Around 4:30 our pastor (and executive producer), Rick, came to visit us. Thanks Rick!

And he got to sit on Frank Sinatra’s chair!

The last song we recorded is called “Forgetful Soul” and the lyrics are adapted from “The Awakened Sinner” form The Valley of Vision.

O MY FORGETFUL SOUL,
Awake from thy wandering dream;
turn from chasing vanities,
look inward, forward, upward,
view thyself,
reflect upon thyself,
who and what thou art, why here
what thou must soon be.
Thou art a creature of God
formed and furnished by Him,
lodged in a body like a shepherd in his tent;
Dost thou not desire to know God’s ways?

O GOD,
Thou injured, neglected, provoked Benefactor
when I think upon Thy greatness and Thy goodness
I am ashamed at my insensibility,
I blush to lift up my face,
for I have foolishly erred.
Shall I go on neglecting Thee,
when every one of Thy rational creatures should love Thee,
and take every care to please Thee?
I confess that Thou hast not been in all my thoughts,
that the knowledge of Thyself as the end of
my being has been strangely overlooked,
that I have never seriously considered
my heart need.
But although my mind is perplexed and divided,
my nature perverse,
yet my secret dispositions still desire Thee.
Let me not delay to come to Thee;
Break the fatal enchantment that binds
my evil affections,
and bring me to a happy mind that rests in Thee,
for Thou hast made me and canst not forget me.
Let Thy Spirit teach me the vital lessons of Christ,
for I am slow to learn;
And hear Thou my broken cries.

We are so thankful for the opportunity to do this project! It’s really shaping up into something great. We are extremely privileged to be working with our producer, Scott Frankfurt.  We’re also super privileged to have Doug Rider engineering and mixing the record. He is incredibly gifted and so great to work with.  More on them later.

Here are the pics from today. Stay tuned!
